Beats In Kansas: The Beat Generation in the Heartland

NEW CAR

From
KANSAS COLLATERAL
by Roxie Powell, 1978

I remember the day my Dad
bought a big shiny car.
He walked in and said,
"It's in the drive, Son."

I got up from reading the
funnies
and looked,
and it was a new shiny car.

My Dad sat down
gave me the keys
and I went out.

It was new and big
and it smelled secret
and I believed it.

So I asked Dad if I could
drive it and he said yes I could,
and I drove it
and I busted it.

And my Grandmother said
nothing at all.
